Aillwee Cave Bear Pits — Burren Ireland

Aillwee Cave in the Burren limestone country of County Clare contains one of Ireland's most unusual geological features — three hibernation hollows carved by brown bears into the cave walls and floors, the last evidence of a species that became extinct in Ireland around 2,500 years ago. The cave's river passage, underground waterfall, and calcite formations are impressive in their own right, but the bear pits — organic depressions in the cave floor where the bears' body heat melted the underlying clay over multiple hibernation seasons — provide a tangible connection to Ireland's vanished megafauna that no other accessible Irish site provides. The Burren landscape above, with its limestone pavements, spring gentians, and extraordinary botanical complexity, provides the surface context for an underground experience of significant archaeological and ecological depth.

About this spectacle

Descending into Aillwee Cave, visitors move through a river passage carved by an ancient underground stream, past rippling calcite formations and a small underground waterfall whose sound carries through the cool, damp air. The temperature inside remains constant year-round, lending the cave an atmosphere of timelessness. The most haunting feature is the three bear pits — organic hollows worn into the cave floor and walls by brown bears that hibernated here before their extinction in Ireland around 2,500 years ago. Body heat from successive seasons of hibernation gradually melted the clay beneath the bears, creating depressions that are unmistakably animal in shape and scale. Crouching beside them, visitors encounter something no museum exhibit replicates: the actual resting place of a vanished species. Above ground, the Burren's limestone pavements stretch toward the horizon, threaded with rare spring gentians in season, adding a second layer of natural wonder to what begins as an underground experience.
