Zwillbrocker Venn — Flamingos
Northernmost free-living flamingo colony in the world, near Vreden.
About this spectacle
At the Zwillbrocker Venn nature reserve in North Rhine-Westphalia, visitors witness something genuinely improbable: a self-sustaining colony of greater flamingos breeding at the northernmost point of any free-living flamingo population in the world. Against a backdrop of shallow wetland pools and heath vegetation, the birds' vivid pink plumage stands out with startling intensity, especially during the breeding season when courtship displays fill the air with synchronized movement and calls. The flatness of the landscape allows for sweeping views across the reserve, and the relative quiet of the German-Dutch border region means the experience carries an almost surreal quality — tropical-looking birds in a distinctly temperate, northern European setting. Observation hides and elevated viewing points allow close but non-disruptive watching of nesting adults and, later in the season, grey-feathered chicks.
