Zavelsteiner Wild Crocus Bloom — Bad Teinach-Zavelstein, Baden-Württemberg
Every early March, the meadows around the small Black Forest village of Zavelstein transform into a violet sea of *Crocus neglectus* — a Mediterranean wild crocus that is virtually unique north of the Alps. An estimated 15 million blooms spread across five-plus hectares of protected meadowland below the village's ruined castle, creating Germany's most celebrated early-spring colour spectacle and earning Zavelstein the official title "Krokusstadt" (Crocus City) since 2022.
About this spectacle
In early March, the meadows below Zavelstein's ruined castle erupt in a dense violet carpet of Crocus neglectus — an estimated 15 million blooms spread across more than five hectares of protected meadowland. Visitors walk paths through undulating waves of purple-violet flowers, the air cool and still carrying the faint sweetness of early spring. The surrounding Black Forest hillsides frame the scene, their bare winter trees providing a stark contrast to the vivid colour underfoot. Morning light is considered the best time to visit, when blooms are fully open and low-angle sunlight intensifies the violet hues. The spectacle is brief — typically confined to a few weeks in early March — so timing matters. Zavelstein itself is a compact historic village with a small ruined castle perched above the meadows, offering elevated vantage points over the bloom. The site is recognised formally as Germany's pre-eminent early-spring floral spectacle, and the village has held the title 'Krokusstadt' since 2022.
