About this spectacle

The Vercors massif in the French Prealps is one of the few places in Western Europe where wolves have naturally recolonised since their return to France in the 1990s. Visitors exploring the vast forests, open plateaux and limestone gorges of this regional natural park may catch fleeting glimpses of these elusive predators at dawn or dusk — a distant silhouette crossing a meadow, tracks pressed into mud or snow, or the haunting sound of a howl carrying across the valley. Sightings require patience, silence and considerable luck. The best approach is to spend time near forest edges at first light, scanning clearings with binoculars. Signs of wolf presence — scats, prints, prey carcasses — are more reliably found than the animals themselves. The experience rewards those who immerse themselves in the wild character of the Vercors rather than expecting a guaranteed encounter.
