Wollgrasblüte Rotes Moor
A high-altitude German bog erupts in white each summer as cotton-grass tufts blanket the Rotes Moor moorland in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve.
About this spectacle
Each summer, the Rotes Moor — a high-altitude raised bog in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve of central Germany — transforms into a sea of white cotton-grass tufts. The fluffy seed heads of Eriophorum species ripple in the wind across the open moorland, creating a striking contrast against the dark peat and surrounding heath. Visitors walk along boardwalk trails through a landscape that feels primordial and still, with the smell of damp peat in the air and the sound of wind sweeping across the open plateau. The soft, cloud-like masses of cotton-grass glow in low morning light and on overcast days take on an ethereal, silver-white luminescence. The bog also hosts other moorland plants and occasional bird calls break the quiet. It is a subtle but deeply atmospheric spectacle, best experienced on foot in late spring to early summer.
