Wildflower Superbloom — Coalseam, Western Australia
After winter rains, Western Australia's vast sandplains erupt in one of the greatest wildflower displays on Earth — over 12,000 species blooming across thousands of kilometres.
About this spectacle
At Coalseam Conservation Park, the arrival of spring transforms the Western Australian sandplains into a living tapestry of colour. Following winter rains, the ground ignites with massed ranks of everlastings — papery daisies in white, yellow, pink, and orange — stretching horizon to horizon across the open scrubland. The air carries a faint floral sweetness, and the silence of the bush is broken only by buzzing pollinators moving between blooms. In a strong season, the display is overwhelming in scale: blankets of colour ripple across gentle undulations, drawing the eye outward across a seemingly endless plain. Morning light is considered the optimal time to visit, when flowers open fully and the low-angle sun saturates the petals with warmth. The experience is immersive and unhurried — visitors walk among the flowers at their own pace, often crouching to examine the intricate detail of individual blooms against the sand. The unpredictability of each season adds an element of pilgrimage to any visit.
