Wild Orchid Meadow — Gotland Sweden

The Baltic island of Gotland is Europe's richest orchid island — 35 native species on a single island, including the pyramidal orchid, the bee orchid, the military orchid, and the spectacular lady's slipper orchid in its Swedish heartland. The limestone meadows (alvar) of Gotland's south and east coasts produce the densest orchid concentrations from May through July, with some alvar meadows holding 50,000 pyramidal orchids per hectare. The Swedish Orchid Tour operated each June from Visby visits the key sites in a week-long programme that covers all major species in flower, and the combination of the island's medieval walled city of Visby (UNESCO World Heritage), the alvar landscape's wildflower richness, and the June light on the Baltic creates one of northern Europe's finest botanical and cultural travel combinations.

About this spectacle

Gotland's limestone alvar meadows are among the most botanically extraordinary landscapes in northern Europe. From May through July, the flat, flower-studded grasslands of the island's south and east coasts erupt with orchid blooms — pyramidal orchids in towering columns, the intricately patterned bee orchid, the imposing military orchid, and the rare, luminous lady's slipper orchid. Walking across an alvar in June, visitors move through a carpet of colour and form that seems almost implausible for a windswept Baltic island. The scent of the meadows mingles with sea air, and the long Scandinavian summer light — golden and horizontal well into the evening — transforms each flower into something glowing. The silence is punctuated by larks and the hum of pollinators. For botanical travellers, the density is staggering: single meadows can hold tens of thousands of pyramidal orchids per hectare. The Swedish Orchid Tour provides guided access across key sites within a week-long June programme, ensuring visitors reach peak-flowering locations across all major species.
