Wild Narcissus Flood — Eifel Valleys, Nordrhein-Westfalen
Every April, the river valleys of the Nordeifel near Monschau — particularly the Perlenbach-Fuhrtsbachtal — erupt in Germany's largest wild daffodil display: an estimated six million *Narcissus pseudonarcissus* blossoms pack 280 hectares of ancient meadows in a golden tide. The blooms are so dense that entire valley floors disappear under yellow and the scent drifts hundreds of metres. This is the same species traditionally associated with Wales and southwest England but Germany's interior population represents one of the largest natural stands in Europe.
About this spectacle
In April, the river valleys of the Nordeifel near Monschau transform into one of Europe's most extraordinary floral spectacles. Six million wild daffodils — Narcissus pseudonarcissus — blanket 280 hectares of ancient meadows in the Perlenbach-Fuhrtsbachtal and surrounding valleys, creating an unbroken golden tide that swallows entire valley floors. The blossoms are dense enough to obscure the grass beneath, and their honeyed fragrance carries hundreds of metres on the cool spring air. Morning light catches the nodding yellow heads at low angles, turning the valley into a luminous, shimmering expanse. Visitors walk softly bordered meadow paths through a living sea of colour, hearing only birdsong, wind, and the distant murmur of streams. This is Germany's largest wild daffodil display and one of the largest natural stands of this species anywhere in Europe — a fleeting, weather-dependent phenomenon that vanishes within weeks, leaving only green meadows behind.
