Whitewater Draw Sandhill Cranes
One of North America's great winter crane gatherings — tens of thousands of Sandhill Cranes roost and lift off in thunderous dawn flights over an Arizona wetland.
About this spectacle
Each winter, tens of thousands of Sandhill Cranes descend on Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area in southeastern Arizona, transforming the shallow wetland basin into a living, breathing spectacle of wings and calls. At dawn and dusk, the sky fills with enormous flocks lifting off or returning to roost, their distinctive bugling cries rolling across the grasslands. Standing at the viewing platform as wave after wave of cranes wheels overhead — rust-and-grey birds against a desert mountain backdrop — is one of the most viscerally overwhelming birding experiences in North America. The soundscape alone, a relentless chorus of rattling bugles, is unforgettable. Between mass flights, cranes forage in the surrounding fields, allowing prolonged close views. The site is managed by Arizona Game and Fish, with simple facilities including viewing platforms and interpretive signage.
