White-tailed Eagle Congregation — Müritz National Park, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
The Müritz, Germany's largest inland lake, and its surrounding national park host one of Central Europe's densest white-tailed eagle populations, with up to 50 pairs breeding in the surrounding forests. In winter the eagle numbers swell as northern birds arrive, and guided boat tours on the Müritz reveal eagles perched on lakeside pines or in low soaring patrols above the ice — often joined by great grey shrikes, common cranes and flocks of wintering ducks that fill the lake margins with movement and sound.
About this spectacle
Standing on the misty shores of the Müritz at dawn in winter, visitors scan lakeside pines for the distinctive white tails and amber bills of Europe's largest eagle. Up to 50 breeding pairs make Müritz National Park one of Central Europe's densest concentrations of white-tailed eagles, and winter swells those numbers further as Scandinavian birds drift south across the ice. Guided boat tours push quietly across the lake, bringing passengers close to eagles perched motionless on low branches or launching into slow, broad-winged patrols above frozen bays. The spectacle extends beyond eagles: great grey shrikes hunt from exposed snags, skeins of common cranes pass overhead, and the lake margins pulse with wintering ducks — teal, pochards, and mergansers — filling the cold air with wing-beats and calls. The combination of apex predators and massed waterbirds in a largely undisturbed landscape makes each morning tour feel genuinely wild.
