Slipping beneath the surface in the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area, you enter the world's most reliable whale shark encounter zone. Year-round, these enormous, gentle filter-feeders — the largest fish on Earth — cruise the lagoon's crystalline water, their spotted skin catching shafts of tropical light as they pass through snorkellers at arm's length. Some animals are so habituated that they linger at coral-head cleaning stations, giving unhurried minutes of eye contact and close approach. The water is warm and clear, the setting one of tropical Maldivian beauty: turquoise shallows, overwater bungalows on the horizon, and a reef ecosystem thrumming with smaller life.
