Whale Shark Aggregation — Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia
Each autumn, following the annual coral spawning of Ningaloo's 300-km fringing reef, the world's largest fish gather in one of the planet's most reliable and accessible aggregations: over 300 individual whale sharks have been identified, with 41,000 people swimming alongside them in 2025 alone. At up to 12 metres long, these gentle filter-feeders cruise just below the surface in water reachable with a few fin-kicks from shore. Spotter planes locate individuals and drop swimmers in for face-to-face glides beside animals larger than a school bus — one of the most humbling wildlife encounters on Earth.
About this spectacle
Each autumn at Ningaloo Reef, spotter planes sweep the luminous turquoise water searching for the dark silhouettes of whale sharks gliding just beneath the surface. When one is found, a boat drops a small group of snorkellers directly into its path. Suddenly the ocean fills with the slow, deliberate presence of a creature up to 12 metres long — a spotted grey mass moving with unhurried grace, its wide mouth filtering the coral-spawn-rich water. Swimmers fin alongside, close enough to see the white spots on its skin and the sweep of its enormous tail. The scale is almost impossible to process: fins, face, then a vast flank scrolling past for what feels like minutes. The water is warm and clear, the fish utterly unbothered. Spotter planes keep radios busy, meaning multiple encounters in a single morning are common. Exits back onto the boat feel strangely ordinary after something so extraordinary.
