Whale Shark Aggregation — Ningaloo Reef March

The Ningaloo Reef whale shark aggregation season from mid-March through July — triggered by the mass coral spawning on the Ningaloo's inner reef in late March, which produces a plankton bloom that the whale sharks travel to feed on — is the world's most reliable and most accessible whale shark interaction programme. EPBC-licensed operators from Exmouth and Coral Bay deploy spotter aircraft to locate feeding whale sharks, then direct boats to position snorkellers within 3 metres as the animals filter-feed at the surface. The interaction protocol's success rate exceeds 95% on days with good visibility, and the experience of swimming alongside a 10-metre whale shark whose pectoral fin is at shoulder height creates a sense of marine scale available at no other snorkel destination. The Ningaloo Marine Park's World Heritage status and the strict management creates the world's finest conservation-tourism whale shark model.

About this spectacle

At Ningaloo Reef, from mid-March through July, visitors board licensed vessels out of Exmouth or Coral Bay as spotter aircraft scan the blue water above the reef. When a whale shark is located, snorkellers slip into the warm Indian Ocean and find themselves alongside an animal up to 10 metres long, its cavernous mouth sweeping the surface for plankton bloomed from the recent coral spawning. The pectoral fin rises to shoulder height. The shark moves with an effortless, slow-motion grace that makes the surrounding ocean feel suddenly, intimately vast. Strict interaction protocols — no touching, minimum distances observed — mean the animal continues feeding undisturbed while participants keep pace in its wake, breathing through snorkels, watching gill rakers pulse. The water clarity and shallow interaction depth make this accessible to confident swimmers of any age. With a success rate exceeding 95% on good-visibility days, this is the world's most reliable whale shark encounter, managed within a UNESCO World Heritage Marine Park.
