About this spectacle

The Gulf of Tadjoura, a sheltered arm of the Gulf of Aden off Djibouti's coast, is one of the planet's most dependable venues for encountering whale sharks in the wild. Dozens of these enormous, gentle filter-feeders gather here to feast on dense clouds of fish spawn, creating an underwater spectacle of extraordinary scale. Visitors typically access the aggregation by boat in the morning hours, slipping into warm, clear water to snorkel or dive alongside animals that can exceed ten metres in length. The sharks move slowly and deliberately through the water column, mouths agape, surrounded by swirling baitfish. The Gulf's sheltered geography moderates swell, making in-water encounters more comfortable than open-ocean alternatives. Above the surface, the deep blue water, volcanic coastal hills, and bright equatorial light create a visually dramatic backdrop. The scale of the aggregation — multiple sharks sometimes visible simultaneously — makes this one of the most immersive large-animal encounters anywhere in the world.
