Wettersteingebirge — Chamois & Edelweiss
Cliff-band fauna and native edelweiss on protected scree in the Wetterstein range.
About this spectacle
The Wetterstein range in Bavaria rises into dramatic limestone ridges where chamois pick their way along cliff bands with extraordinary agility. In late summer, edelweiss — the iconic alpine flower — blooms in protected scree and rocky ledges above the tree line, its woolly white star-shaped flowers clinging to near-vertical terrain. Visitors who make the ascent encounter a world of dwarf shrubs, alpine grasses, and wildflowers compressed into a narrow band between forest and bare rock. The air is cool and clear, the silence broken only by the clatter of stones and the occasional whistle of a marmot. Chamois may be spotted at dawn or dusk moving across open slopes, while edelweiss is best sought in mid-morning light when the landscape glows in full alpine sun. This is a rewarding, if strenuous, destination for wildlife observers, botanists, and hikers drawn to authentic high-alpine scenery.
