Wattled Crane Congregations (Kafue Flats) — Blue Lagoon National Park
Blue Lagoon hosts one of Africa's largest Wattled Crane gatherings — a rare spectacle of a vulnerable giant on the vast Kafue Flats floodplain.
About this spectacle
Blue Lagoon National Park on the Kafue Flats hosts one of Africa's most significant congregations of Wattled Cranes, the continent's tallest flying bird. Visitors witness flocks of these striking grey-and-white birds — distinguished by their dangling red-and-white facial wattles — wading through shallow seasonal floodplains in search of aquatic tubers and invertebrates. The vast, open wetland landscape amplifies the spectacle: cranes calling in flight, landing in slow deliberate descents, and clustering in the waterlogged grasslands as far as the eye can see. The Kafue Flats are globally critical habitat for this vulnerable species, and concentrations here can number in the hundreds during peak flood and dry-season transitions. The flat horizon, big Zambian sky, and the birds' haunting calls create an atmosphere of genuine wild remoteness.
