Vulture Thermals Monfragüe — Extremadura Spain

Monfragüe National Park in Extremadura's Tagus River gorge concentrates the world's largest colony of black vultures (Aegypius monachus) and Spain's finest griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) spectacle — 320 black vulture pairs and 2,000 griffon vultures roosting and nesting in the Peña Falcon cliff, with the Tagus's thermal columns rising above the gorge from 10am onward to carry 300+ vultures simultaneously in wheeling circles visible from every hilltop. The Salto del Gitano (Gypsy's Jump) viewpoint places observers directly opposite the Peña Falcon's nesting ledges at eye level, with griffon vultures launching from the cliff face at 20-metre range and the black vultures' enormous flat-winged silhouettes distinctive even at 200 metres. The park's additional cast — Spanish imperial eagle, black stork, black-shouldered kite, and Eurasian eagle-owl in the gorge's cork oak forest — makes Monfragüe Europe's most raptor-rich accessible reserve.

About this spectacle

Standing at the Salto del Gitano viewpoint, visitors face the Peña Falcon cliff almost at eye level — close enough to watch griffon vultures push off the limestone ledges and spread their two-and-a-half-metre wingspans barely 20 metres away. From around 10am the Tagus gorge's thermal columns begin lifting hundreds of birds simultaneously: griffon vultures in loose, wheeling towers of 300 or more, and among them the heavier black vultures with their flat-winged, almost motionless soaring profile. The contrast between the two species is immediate and educational — griffons tipping and jostling, black vultures steady and immense. Listen for the rush of air through primary feathers as birds bank overhead. Scan the scrub-oak slopes for Spanish imperial eagle or pause to watch black storks glide low along the river. The park's compactness means multiple species parade past a single fixed point, making Monfragüe one of the most rewarding single-viewpoint raptor sites in Europe.
