Vulture Restaurant Thermals — Monfragüe Spain
Monfragüe National Park in Extremadura hosts the world's densest concentration of cliff-nesting raptors — over 300 pairs of griffon vultures, 30 pairs of black vultures, breeding Bonelli's eagles, and black storks nesting on the dramatic red quartzite cliffs of the Peñafalcon. In the hours after 9am when the thermals develop over the sun-heated cliff faces, vultures spiral upward in mixed kettles of dozens to hundreds of birds, their 2.6-metre wingspans barely moving as they gain altitude effortlessly and the thermal roars with the sound of wind across hundreds of wing surfaces simultaneously. The Peñafalcon viewpoint — where the cliff face is directly opposite at 200 metres — provides a viewing geometry available at no other European raptor site: raptors at eye level, rising from below, their wing-tip vortices visible in the thermal shimmer.

Standing at the Peñafalcon viewpoint in Monfragüe National Park, visitors face a sheer red quartzite cliff at a distance of roughly 200 metres — close enough to see the textures of wing feathers. From around 9am, as the sun heats the cliff face and thermals build, griffon vultures begin to lift from their ledges. Within minutes, dozens spiral upward in mixed kettles with black vultures and occasional Bonelli's eagles, their enormous wingspans barely flexing as they ride the rising air. The sound is unlike anything in European birdwatching: a deep, soft roar of wind moving across hundreds of wing surfaces at once. Raptors drift past at eye level or rise from below the viewpoint, making the geometry feel immersive rather than observational. Black storks may be visible on ledges opposite. As the thermals mature, kettles can reach into the hundreds. The spectacle requires no hiking, no early pre-dawn start — simply arriving by mid-morning on a clear, calm day delivers one of the continent's most reliable wildlife experiences.
