Virgin Komi Forests Old-Growth Forest — Russia
One of Europe's last great untouched boreal forests — a vast, ancient wilderness of spruce and silence in Russia's far north.
About this spectacle
The Virgin Komi Forests stretch across the Ural Mountains and the Pechora River basin in Russia's Komi Republic, representing one of Europe's last and largest intact boreal forest ecosystems. Visitors enter a primeval landscape of ancient spruce, fir, and pine, where centuries-old trees dwarf all movement beneath. The forest floor is thick with mosses, lichens, and wild berries, while the canopy filters light into soft green columns. Rivers run clear and undisturbed through flood-plain meadows. The silence here is profound — broken only by wind, the crack of a falling branch, or the distant call of a capercaillie. Autumn transforms the understory into deep amber and rust. This is a place of scale and stillness: no roads intrude, no clear-cuts interrupt the horizon. Wildlife moves unseen but close — elk, brown bear, and wolverine are resident. The experience rewards patience and a tolerance for remoteness.
