Titan Arum Bloom — Sumatra Indonesia

The titan arum — the world's largest unbranched inflorescence, reaching 3 metres in height and emitting the most powerful rotting-flesh odour in the plant kingdom — blooms unpredictably in the rainforest of Sumatra's Bukit Barisan range, with a single bloom event lasting only 24–48 hours before collapse. Individual plants may go 7–10 years between blooms. In the wild Sumatran rainforest, the emergence of a titan arum bloom — the spathe unfurling from crimson-red to reveal the cream interior over 6–8 hours while the thermogenic spadix heats to 38 degrees Celsius to volatilise the carrion odour — is a forest event of the first order, drawing corpse flies and beetles from kilometres away. The Gunung Leuser National Park is the most accessible wild site.

About this spectacle

Witnessing a wild titan arum bloom in Gunung Leuser National Park is an encounter unlike anything else in the plant kingdom. The spathe — a vast crimson-red bract — unfurls gradually over 6–8 hours to reveal a cream interior surrounding the towering spadix, which can reach 3 metres in height. As evening falls, the thermogenic spadix heats to 38°C, releasing a wave of carrion stench so intense it draws corpse flies and beetles from kilometres away. The smell is overwhelming, almost physical — visitors frequently describe it as a wall of rotting flesh. The bloom window is brutally short: 24–48 hours before the entire structure collapses. Finding a bloom requires luck and local knowledge, as individual plants may rest 7–10 years between flowering events. The surrounding lowland and montane rainforest of Bukit Barisan amplifies the experience — humidity, darkness, insect sounds — making this one of the most viscerally memorable botanical events on Earth.
