Tibetan Fox & Pika — Sichuan Grasslands

The high-altitude grasslands of the Sichuan-Tibet border region around Sêrtar and Yushu host one of wildlife photography's most beloved subjects — the Tibetan fox, whose extraordinary square-faced expression of permanent detached disdain has made it a global internet sensation — hunting plateau pikas on the open alpine steppe in encounters of considerable comedy and genuine predator-prey drama at elevations above 3,800 metres. The foxes hunt by stalking pika colonies on the short-grazed steppe, their dense russet-and-grey fur and blocky head giving them a uniquely geometric appearance unlike any other canid, and their habit of sitting motionless at pika burrow entrances for extended periods creates extended close-range observation opportunities from vehicles on the plateau roads. The Tibetan plateau landscape — the largest and highest plateau on Earth, its grasslands extending to every horizon above a sky of intense blue at altitude — provides a backdrop of literally breathtaking scale and emptiness for the fox encounters. Kiang wild asses gallop across the same grasslands, black-necked cranes nest in the marshy depressions, and the wolf packs that occasionally pursue the same pika colonies as the foxes complete a predator guild of the roof of the world. The Sêrtar monastery — the world's largest Tibetan Buddhist college — adds a human cultural dimension of extraordinary spiritual intensity to the wildlife landscape.

About this spectacle

On the vast open steppe around Sêrtar and Yushu, above 3,800 metres, the Tibetan fox delivers one of wildlife photography's most captivating performances. Its square, almost cartoonishly deadpan face — dense russet and grey fur framing a geometry unlike any other canid — has earned it global fame. Visitors watch from vehicles parked on plateau roads as foxes stalk plateau pika colonies with patient, unhurried precision: freezing statue-still beside burrow entrances, then lunging in a burst of explosive energy, often missing with supreme apparent indifference. The encounters unfold against a grassland horizon that stretches without interruption in every direction under an electric blue high-altitude sky. Kiang wild asses gallop past in loose herds, black-necked cranes wade the marshy hollows, and occasional wolf sightings add pulse-quickening drama. Morning light is optimal — low-angled and golden across the treeless steppe — and the foxes are reliably active at the roadside, making extended, relaxed observation and photography sessions possible for visitors willing to sit quietly in or beside their vehicles.
