Storchendorf Rühstädt
One of Europe's largest white stork colonies nests every summer directly on the rooftops of a tiny Brandenburg village.
About this spectacle
Rühstädt is known as Germany's 'Stork Village', a small settlement in the Prignitz region of Brandenburg that hosts one of the largest white stork colonies in Europe. Each summer, visitors can watch dozens of nesting pairs perched atop chimneys, rooftops, and specially erected platforms, their clacking bills and wing-spreading displays filling the air. The village itself is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, set amid flat river meadows and floodplains that provide ideal foraging ground. Storks arrive in spring and depart in late summer, and at peak season the colony is genuinely remarkable — nests are visible from the village lanes without any special equipment. The surrounding landscape of the Elbe floodplains adds a tranquil, pastoral quality to the experience.
