About this spectacle

Bergenhusen, a small village in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, is renowned as one of Europe's premier white stork breeding villages. Each spring and summer, white storks return from their African wintering grounds to nest atop chimneys, rooftops, and specially erected platforms throughout the village. Visitors witness large, elegant birds landing and taking off from nests just metres away, performing clapping bill displays and tending their growing chicks. The air fills with the distinctive clattering of bills as pairs greet one another. Pairs of storks can be observed at close range from village lanes without special equipment, making it an unusually intimate wildlife experience. The surrounding meadows and ditches provide rich foraging grounds, so storks can often be seen probing the grass for frogs and insects just beyond the garden fences.
