About this spectacle

Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary sits at the mouth of Massachusetts Bay, where cold, nutrient-rich upwellings create one of the Atlantic's most productive feeding grounds. From spring through autumn, humpback whales congregate here in remarkable numbers to feed on sand lance and other small fish, often employing spectacular bubble-net feeding techniques where groups of whales cooperate to corral prey. Visitors board whale-watch vessels out of Gloucester, Provincetown, or Boston and typically witness multiple humpback surfacings, tail flukes, and occasional full-body breaches. The ocean air carries the sound of enormous exhalations as these 40-foot animals roll and lunge at the surface. Minke whales, fin whales, and Atlantic white-sided dolphins frequently share the scene. The proximity of the bank to major ports makes this one of the most accessible deep-water whale encounters on the US East Coast.
