About this spectacle

Off the Kaikōura Peninsula, a submarine canyon plunges close to shore, generating nutrient-rich upwellings that sustain one of the world's most reliable sperm whale populations year-round. Visitors board whale-watch vessels from Kaikōura township and head into the open Pacific, where guides use hydrophones to listen for the distinctive clicks of diving males. When a whale surfaces to breathe after a deep dive, the sequence unfolds slowly — multiple exhalations, a rising back, and finally the iconic flukes lifting clear of the water before the animal disappears for another 40–60 minutes below. The scale is visceral: these are the largest toothed predators on Earth, and their proximity to shore makes sightings feel intimate rather than remote. Morning light is optimal, casting warm tones across the Seaward Kaikōura Range as a dramatic backdrop behind surfacing whales. The combination of mountains, ocean, and giant cetaceans in a single frame is unlike almost anywhere else on the planet.
