Southern Right Whale Calving — Head of Bight
Southern right whales gather in the sheltered waters of the Great Australian Bight to calve and nurse their young, viewable from clifftop platforms.
About this spectacle
From clifftop viewing platforms at the Head of Bight, visitors gaze down into the vivid turquoise waters of the Great Australian Bight as southern right whales emerge, roll, breach, and nurse their calves far below. The scale is humbling: these massive animals move slowly through sheltered bays, their broad backs and distinctive callosities clearly visible against the clear water. Calves are often seen tucked close to their mothers, sometimes nursing or playing at the surface. The dramatic limestone cliffs frame the scene, with the Southern Ocean stretching to the horizon. Morning light is optimal, reducing glare off the water and illuminating the whales from above. The experience is almost entirely visual and auditory — the sound of distant blows and the occasional breach echoes upward. No boats, no crowds in the water — just the platform rail and open sky between observer and one of the ocean's rarest whale species.
