Southern Right Whale Calving Aggregation — Golfo San José
One of the world's most reliable southern right whale nurseries — calves breach alongside their mothers in a sheltered Patagonian bay every austral winter.
About this spectacle
Each austral winter, southern right whales gather in the sheltered waters of Golfo San José, a protected bay in Patagonian Argentina, to give birth and nurse their calves. Visitors watching from shore or low-speed boats witness mothers and calves rolling, breaching, and slapping the water's surface — close enough at times to hear the resonant exhalations. The bay's calm, turquoise shallows amplify every movement, and on clear winter days the backdrop of the Patagonian steppe and open Atlantic sky frames the spectacle dramatically. Whale-watch vessels approach under strict speed limits, and the whales often come alongside with apparent curiosity. Calves learn to breach in ungainly slow-motion arcs while their mothers rest at the surface, exposing barnacle-patterned flanks. The combination of accessible proximity, predictable aggregation, and the emotional weight of witnessing newborn giants makes this one of South America's most compelling marine wildlife experiences.
