Southern Giant Petrel Breeding Aggregation — Crozet Islands
One of the world's most remote seabird breeding sites — Southern Giant Petrels nesting undisturbed on subantarctic islands rarely visited by humans.
About this spectacle
The Crozet Islands, remote and storm-lashed in the subantarctic Indian Ocean, host significant breeding aggregations of Southern Giant Petrels. Visitors — almost exclusively researchers or passengers on permitted expedition vessels — witness these large, imposing seabirds nesting on open tussock-grass slopes and rocky ground, filling the air with the deep wingbeats and guttural calls of one of the Southern Ocean's most formidable scavengers. Nesting birds sit low on their ground nests, occasionally spreading their enormous wings in threat displays. The surrounding landscape is wild and elemental: howling westerly winds, cold sea spray, and a horizon unbroken by human presence. King penguins and elephant seals share the beaches nearby, adding to an overwhelming sense of subantarctic abundance. The experience is not comfortable — weather is unpredictable and often severe — but for those who reach Crozet, the proximity to raw seabird life on a near-pristine island is genuinely extraordinary.
