Socotra Dragon Blood Tree Forest — Yemen
The dragon blood tree of Socotra Island off Yemen is one of the world's most architecturally extraordinary trees — its upward-opening umbrella canopy of dense, symmetrically radiating branches densely packed with linear leaves at the tips creates a form unlike any other tree on Earth. The Diksam Plateau holds the largest remaining dragon blood forests, thousands of trees covering the limestone karst in a landscape that combines grey limestone, dark green umbrella canopies, and the mist that forms around the plateau in the monsoon season to create one of the most alien yet beautiful landscapes on Earth. The dragon blood tree's red resin bleeds from cuts in the bark in dramatic scarlet flows that explain the name.
About this spectacle
Standing on the Diksam Plateau, visitors encounter a landscape that defies botanical expectation. Thousands of dragon blood trees spread their dense, symmetrical umbrella canopies across grey limestone karst, each crown a nearly perfect disc of dark green radiating branches packed with linear leaves only at their very tips. The effect is of a forest of living parasols suspended above bare stone. During the monsoon season, mist drifts across the plateau and weaves between the trunks, softening the alien geometry and lending the scene an ethereal quality. Look closely at any nick in the bark and a vivid scarlet resin — the dragon's blood — seeps out, blood-red against pale grey rock. The silence is broken mainly by wind and the occasional rustle through the canopy. No other forest on Earth looks quite like this: the combination of form, colour, and atmospheric mist produces a spectacle that is simultaneously surreal and majestic.
