Singschwan-Überwinterung Mittelelbe
Hundreds of bugling whooper swans spend the winter on the Middle Elbe floodplains, filling the cold air with their resonant trumpet calls.
About this spectacle
Each winter, the Middle Elbe floodplains between Dessau and Magdeburg host one of Central Europe's most striking gatherings of whooper swans. Arriving from Scandinavian and Siberian breeding grounds, hundreds of these large, bugling birds settle on shallow river channels, flooded meadows, and oxbow lakes. Visitors standing along the dike paths hear the resonant, trumpet-like calls carrying across flat, open farmland in the cold morning air. The swans feed in unhurried family groups, their brilliant white plumage contrasting with grey winter skies and the dark water. Occasional exchanges of honking signal territorial or social tensions, while distant skeins of birds arriving or departing trace slow arcs overhead. The landscape itself is austere — bare willows, frost-covered grass, wide horizons — but the sheer number of swans and the quality of their calls make this a genuinely moving midwinter wildlife experience in the German lowlands.
