Short-Eared Owl Winter Hunting — Orkney Scotland

The Orkney Mainland and the island of Hoy hold Britain's highest wintering short-eared owl density — the combination of vole-rich rough grassland, low light-intensity winter sun, and the owls' habit of hunting actively from 3pm onward makes Orkney's short-eared owls the most reliably viewable large owl population in Britain. From November through February, driving the Orkney roads in the late afternoon produces multiple short-eared owl sightings per hour — the owls' low, buoyant hunting flight quartering the grassland on long wings in the horizontal winter light, occasionally staring directly at the stationary car with their cat-like yellow eyes. Orkney's dramatic moorland and sea landscape — the Ring of Brodgar stone circle, the Churchill Barriers, and the constant seabird presence — makes the short-eared owl winter one of Scotland's finest low-season wildlife experiences.

About this spectacle

On Orkney's Mainland and Hoy from November through February, short-eared owls are a near-constant presence in the late afternoon landscape. From around 3pm, as the low winter sun angles across the rough grassland, these large, long-winged owls lift from fence posts and moorland edges to begin quartering the vole-rich fields in buoyant, tilting flight. Watching from a stationary car along the island's single-track roads, visitors can expect multiple birds in a single session — drifting low, banking into the wind, then hovering briefly before dropping. The owls' pale, moth-like underparts glow in the horizontal light. When one glides close, the disc-shaped face and piercing yellow eyes make direct contact startling and intimate. The surrounding landscape amplifies the experience: wide skies, prehistoric monuments, sea glimpses, and the sound of wind and distant seabirds. No hiking or specialist equipment is required — the roads themselves are the viewing platform.
