Säbelschnäbler-Kolonie Beltringharder Koog
A thriving pied avocet breeding colony in a restored North Frisian polder — elegant waders with swept bills nesting amid coastal wetlands on the Schleswig-Holstein coast.
About this spectacle
At Beltringharder Koog, one of Germany's largest coastal restoration areas along the North Frisian Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea coast, a notable colony of pied avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta) establishes its breeding grounds each spring. Visitors witness the elegant black-and-white waders with their distinctive upswept bills foraging in shallow lagoons, sweeping their bills side to side through brackish water in search of invertebrates. The colony's collective alarm calls and aggressive mobbing of aerial predators create a vivid, noisy spectacle. The flat, open polder landscape offers wide views across managed wetlands where avocets nest among terns, redshanks, and lapwings. Early mornings bring the best light, with birds silhouetted against broad sky reflections in the shallow pools. Binoculars or a spotting scope are recommended to watch nest-guarding behavior and chick-rearing without disturbing the colony.
