About this spectacle

In autumn, the forests and meadows of Schorfheide-Chorin echo with one of Germany's most dramatic wildlife displays: the red deer rut. Stags bellow deep, resonant roars that carry across the misty landscape at dawn and dusk, competing for dominance and access to hinds. Visitors standing quietly at forest edges may witness stags clashing antlers in fierce combat, their breath steaming in the cold morning air. The Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve provides a large, relatively undisturbed habitat where red deer populations are healthy. The spectacle is visceral — primal calls, crashing undergrowth, and the smell of damp woodland combine into an unforgettable sensory experience. Guided ranger walks are commonly offered in the region during the rut season, allowing visitors to approach quietly without disturbing the animals.
