Reindeer Migration — Finnmark Norway

The Sámi reindeer herds of Finnmark migrate 400 kilometres from the Finnmark Plateau's winter pastures to the Varanger and Nordkinn peninsulas' summer coastal grazing in May and June — the herds of 10,000–15,000 animals crossing the river systems in swimming migrations visible from the road bridges. The Tana and Neiden river crossings are the most spectacular individual events: the entire herd's simultaneous entry into the river at the lead animals' crossing, the river surface white with swimming reindeer for 20–30 minutes, and the Sámi herders on horseback and ATV guiding the flanks creates one of Norway's most dramatic traditional land-use spectacles. The midnight sun's continuous light during the June migration means the crossing can occur at any hour, and the combination of the sub-arctic landscape, the reindeer's crossing sound, and the Sámi herding culture creates a genuinely primordial encounter with northern European nomadic tradition.

About this spectacle

Each May and June, thousands of Sámi-herded reindeer funnel down from the vast Finnmark Plateau toward the coast, covering some 400 kilometres to summer pastures on the Varanger and Nordkinn peninsulas. The most arresting moments come at river crossings like the Tana and Neiden, where the entire herd plunges simultaneously into the current — the river surface turning white with swimming animals for roughly 20 to 30 minutes, a roar of splashing and bellowing filling the sub-arctic air. Sámi herders on horseback and ATV work the flanks, guiding stragglers, in a tradition that has shaped this landscape for centuries. Because the June crossings unfold under the midnight sun, they can happen at any hour, lending an otherworldly golden or peach light to scenes of 10,000 to 15,000 animals churning through open water. Observers can watch from road bridges, close enough to feel the spray and hear the clicking of tendons that is the reindeer's signature sound — an immersive, unscripted encounter with one of northern Europe's last great land migrations.
