Raptor Migration — Tarifa
Tarifa, at the southernmost tip of continental Europe, is the continent's greatest raptor migration bottleneck — the narrowest point of the Strait of Gibraltar where Africa is visible just 14 kilometres across the water, and where hundreds of thousands of raptors, storks, and large soaring birds concentrate each spring and autumn as they cross between continents on rising thermals. In September and October, up to 450,000 birds of 36 species cross over Tarifa in a single season, including 150,000 honey buzzards, 25,000 black kites, 10,000 short-toed eagles, and thousands of black storks — numbers that produce days when a continuous stream of birds passes overhead from dawn until the thermals die at dusk. The observation points at Cazalla and Facinas overlook the crossing lanes, with observers counting thousands of birds per hour on peak days when thermals are strong and the wind is easterly. The combination of dramatic cliff-top scenery, the constant two-way traffic of birds between Europe and Africa, and the palpable sense of witnessing one of nature's great seasonal rhythms makes this one of Europe's premier wildlife destinations each autumn.
About this spectacle
Standing at Cazalla or Facinas in late September, visitors look skyward to witness a near-continuous river of raptors streaming overhead from horizon to horizon. Honey buzzards pass in kettles of dozens, sometimes hundreds, spiralling up on thermals before gliding south toward Africa just 14 kilometres away. Black kites cut purposefully across the strait, while short-toed eagles circle high above the limestone ridges. On peak easterly-wind mornings, the sky fills with birds from first light until thermals collapse at dusk — a sustained sensory experience of whistling wings, calling birds, and the drama of continents connected by flight. The backdrop is equally striking: clifftop scrubland, the shimmering Strait, and the silhouette of the Moroccan Rif on clear days. Autumn brings the highest volumes, with September and October seeing the bulk of traffic. Spring offers a reverse passage that is quieter but no less rewarding. The counting stations give the experience a citizen-science dimension, with telescope-wielding observers logging thousands of birds per hour on exceptional days.
