Raptor Migration — Strait of Gibraltar Spain

The Strait of Gibraltar's raptor migration at Tarifa — 400,000 raptors of 40 species crossing the 14-kilometre strait between Europe and Africa twice a year, the spring northward migration peaking in April and May and the autumn southward migration peaking in September and October — creates one of the world's finest single-location raptor observation experiences. The thermal columns above the Tarifa headland lift honey buzzards, black kites, and short-toed eagles in spiralling kettles before they glide across the strait, and at peak migration up to 10,000 raptors per hour pass the La Peña viewpoint above the town. The migration's combination of the African continent visible on clear days across the water, the town of Tarifa's white buildings and Atlantic wind culture, and the continuous raptor stream creates a migration spectacle accessible to the widest possible audience in one of Europe's most charismatic locations.

About this spectacle

Standing at La Peña viewpoint above Tarifa, visitors watch an almost unbroken river of raptors funnel overhead — honey buzzards riding thermals in dense spiralling kettles, black kites streaming in loose chains, and short-toed eagles tilting on broad wings before committing to the open water crossing. On peak autumn mornings the sky can hold thousands of birds simultaneously, all moving in the same direction with quiet urgency. The 14-kilometre crossing to Africa is close enough to see the Moroccan coastline on clear days, lending every raptor's departure a dramatic sense of continental scale. Wind is a constant companion at Tarifa — sometimes channelling birds low and fast, sometimes stacking them in soaring towers above the headland. The experience rewards both seasoned birders, who can work through 40 species in a single morning, and casual visitors drawn simply by the sheer volume of wings. The white town below, the blue strait, and the endless procession of raptors combine into one of Europe's most visually arresting wildlife encounters.
