Proboscis Monkey Riverine Congregation (Kinabatangan River, Borneo) — Kutai National Park
Endangered proboscis monkeys — found nowhere else on Earth — gather in riverside trees at dusk along Borneo's Kinabatangan River, within reach of a small riverboat.
About this spectacle
At dusk along the Kinabatangan River in East Kalimantan, proboscis monkeys descend from the forest interior to gather in the riverside trees before nightfall. Visitors watching from small river boats witness the distinctive large-nosed males leading troops through the canopy, their reddish-brown coats catching the fading light. The calls of the males — loud honks and nasal bellows — carry across the water as groups settle into sleeping trees. Occasionally, individuals leap dramatically between branches or plunge into the river to cross to the opposite bank. Hornbills, proboscis storks, and silver langurs often share the same riparian corridor, making the boat ride itself a wildlife corridor experience. The dense, humid riverside forest is alive with sounds, and the reflection of the animals in the still water at golden hour creates a scene of exceptional visual drama. This is one of the few remaining strongholds for the endemic and endangered proboscis monkey.
