Pribilof Fur Seals
One of the world's largest fur seal rookeries, where hundreds of thousands of seals gather on remote Alaskan islands each summer.
About this spectacle
The Pribilof Islands in Alaska's Bering Sea host one of the most dramatic wildlife gatherings in North America. Each summer, hundreds of thousands of northern fur seals haul out on rocky beaches, filling the air with constant barking, growling, and the smell of the sea. Massive bulls defend territories while cows nurse pups in tightly packed rookeries. Visitors stand at cliff-top overlooks watching the chaos unfold below — bulls jousting, pups tumbling over each other, and Steller sea lions occasionally mixed in at the margins. The surrounding fog-shrouded islands add a raw, remote atmosphere unlike any zoo or managed reserve. Seabirds wheel overhead, and the cold Bering wind carries the noise of thousands of animals. It is loud, pungent, and utterly wild — a spectacle of sheer mammalian abundance on one of the most remote populated islands in the United States.
