Orca Salmon Hunt — Johnstone Strait British Columbia

Johnstone Strait in northern Vancouver Island is the world's finest orca (Orcinus orca) kayaking destination — the Northern Resident orca community (250 individuals in 16 pods) returns annually from July through October to follow the chinook salmon run through the strait, and their echolocation calls, family vocal dialects, and surface behaviours are observable from kayak at 50-metre range. The rubbing beaches at Robson Bight Ecological Reserve — where the orcas rub their bodies on smooth underwater pebbles in a social behaviour unique to this population — are accessible only from the water, and kayakers positioned off the reserve boundary watch pods of 20–30 orcas entering the bay in tight family formation and engaging in the rubbing behaviour for 30–60 minutes. The combination of old-growth forest coastline, the strait's mountain backdrop, and the orcas' intimate proximity to kayaks creates one of the world's finest wildlife kayaking experiences.

About this spectacle

Johnstone Strait, in the waters off northern Vancouver Island, offers one of the world's most intimate orca encounters. From July through October, the Northern Resident community — 250 individuals across 16 pods — returns to follow the chinook salmon run through the strait. Kayakers position themselves off the boundary of Robson Bight Ecological Reserve and watch pods of 20–30 orcas moving in tight family formations before entering the bay to rub their bodies on smooth underwater pebbles, a social behaviour unique to this population. The orcas' echolocation clicks, family vocal dialects, and surface behaviours — spy-hops, rolls, and close passes — unfold at roughly 50-metre range. The surrounding scenery amplifies the experience: old-growth temperate rainforest crowds the shoreline, and snow-capped coastal mountains frame the strait behind the dorsal fins. Mornings tend to offer calmer waters and cleaner light for observation. This is a multi-day paddling commitment in remote wilderness, but for those prepared for it, the combination of orca intimacy and raw landscape is unmatched.
