Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Arribada — Playa Escobilla
One of Earth's greatest mass-nesting events: thousands of olive ridley turtles storm Oaxaca's Playa Escobilla simultaneously in a breathtaking oceanic ritual.
About this spectacle
Playa Escobilla on Mexico's Oaxacan Pacific coast hosts one of the world's most dramatic wildlife mass-events: the olive ridley sea turtle arribada. During peak nights, thousands — sometimes tens of thousands — of female turtles emerge from the surf simultaneously to nest in the sand, moving in a slow, determined procession that stretches as far as the eye can see. The beach fills with the sound of flippers scraping sand and the faint hiss of breath as each turtle excavates her nest. The air carries the salt of the ocean and the earthy scent of turned sand. Hatchling emergences weeks later offer a second pulse of activity, with tiny turtles scrambling seaward at dusk. The scale and synchrony of the event — coordinated by biological cues that remain only partly understood — creates a visceral sense of ancient, unstoppable natural force.
