National Bison Range
One of the oldest and most accessible bison refuges in North America, where free-roaming herds of American bison graze against a mountain backdrop.
About this spectacle
The National Bison Range in Montana's Flathead Valley offers one of North America's most visceral encounters with wild American bison. Visitors drive or hike through rolling grasslands and open prairies where herds of bison roam freely, the massive animals grazing, wallowing, and occasionally thundering across the landscape. In late summer the rut fills the air with deep bellowing and the dust of bull confrontations. Pronghorn, white-tailed and mule deer, elk, and bighorn sheep share the terrain, making every loop of the refuge a shifting panorama of native wildlife. Hawks and eagles circle overhead while the Mission Mountains rise dramatically to the east, providing a stunning backdrop. Early mornings bring the best light and the most animal activity, with mist lifting off the grasslands as bison silhouettes emerge from the quiet.
