Montezuma Snow Goose Migration
Thousands of snow geese descend on Montezuma NWR's marshes during migration, filling the sky with white wings and an unforgettable wall of sound.
About this spectacle
Each autumn and spring, the skies above Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in upstate New York fill with the spectacle of snow geese moving through in massive, swirling flocks. The sight of thousands of white birds banking and turning against grey November skies — accompanied by an almost deafening chorus of calls — is one of the signature wildlife events of the Northeast. Visitors can scan from roadside pull-offs and observation platforms across the refuge's marshes and impoundments, watching waves of geese lift off and settle in synchronized motion. The surrounding wetlands also attract Canada geese, tundra swans, dabbling ducks, and various shorebirds, creating a layered spectacle of waterbird movement. Cool autumn air, the smell of marsh grass, and the constant background noise of migrating waterfowl define the experience. Dawn and dusk flights are especially dramatic as the geese move between feeding fields and overnight roost water.
