Mississippi Sandhill Crane NWR
Home to one of the rarest birds in North America, this Mississippi refuge shelters the critically small population of non-migratory Mississippi sandhill cranes.
About this spectacle
The Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge protects one of the rarest subspecies of crane in North America — the non-migratory Mississippi sandhill crane. Visitors may catch glimpses of these tall, gray birds moving through the wet pine savanna landscape, calling with their distinctive bugling cries that carry far across the open grasslands. The refuge's mossy pitcher plant bogs and longleaf pine flatwoods create an atmospheric backdrop unlike any other wildlife sanctuary on the Gulf Coast. Guided tours offer the best chance to spot cranes in their natural habitat, walking slowly through the savanna in small family groups. The surrounding landscape hums with insects and songbirds, and the rare carnivorous plants dotting the ground add a layer of botanical wonder to an already unusual wildlife encounter.
