Minke Whale Snorkelling — Lofoten Islands Norway
The Vestfjorden between the Lofoten Islands and mainland Norway concentrates minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) during the summer herring season from June through September — the smallest baleen whale at 10 metres, the most acrobatic of the rorquals, and the most reliably encountered cetacean in Norwegian waters. Small-boat RIB tours from Svolvær and Henningsvær approach feeding minkes at close range, and the whale's lunge-feeding (rolling sideways at the surface, the pleated throat expanding as it engulfs fish) and the curious 'spy-hopping' (vertically raising the head to observe the boat) create encounters of extraordinary intimacy for a baleen whale. The Lofoten's combination of the minke whale encounters, the orca winter visits (October–January herring season), the white-tailed eagle colony, and the mountain-from-the-sea landscape makes the archipelago one of Norway's finest year-round wildlife destinations.
About this spectacle
Out on the cold, fish-rich waters of Vestfjorden, a small RIB accelerates across glassy swells while scanning for the tell-tale blow of a minke whale. When one is spotted, the boat idles back and passengers slide into drysuits before entering the water. What follows is unlike almost any other cetacean encounter: a ten-metre whale banking sideways at the surface, its pleated white-striped throat ballooning outward as it lunges through a ball of herring, then surfacing close enough to hear the rush of expelled breath. Sometimes a minke will hang vertically, raising its snout above the waterline in a slow spy-hop, appearing to study the snorkellers with evident curiosity. The Lofoten light in summer — angled gold even at midday, with serrated mountains rising straight from the sea as backdrop — gives the whole scene a luminous, otherworldly quality. Herring-fuelled feeding activity peaks in the morning hours, and multiple whales may be working the same area simultaneously. This is the most reliably encountered baleen whale in Norwegian waters, making each tour a high-probability wildlife event rather than a gamble.
