Midwife Toad Egg-Carrying — Iberian Peninsula

The midwife toad of Spain and Portugal is one of Europe's most behaviourally extraordinary amphibians — the male carries the fertilised egg strings wrapped around his hind legs for 3–7 weeks until they are ready to hatch, transporting them to moisture when needed and calling from rocky walls and dry-stone walls on warm April and May nights in a clear, haunting 'ting' repeated every few seconds. Finding a male with egg strings visible on his legs, calling from a wall crevice in a Spanish village garden, is one of the most intimate European amphibian experiences — a glimpse of evolution's most unusual solutions to the challenge of terrestrial reproduction. The species inhabits human-modified landscapes — gardens, road banks, stone walls — at medium altitudes across the Iberian Peninsula, making it more accessible than most of Europe's specialist amphibians.

About this spectacle

On warm April and May nights in Spanish village gardens and along rocky road banks, the male midwife toad announces himself with a clear, haunting 'ting' call repeated every few seconds from a wall crevice or stone hollow. Crouch close with a torch and you may glimpse the pale egg strings — wrapped neatly around his hind legs — glistening in the lamplight. The male carries these fertilised eggs for three to seven weeks, occasionally venturing to damp surfaces to keep them moist. The Sierra de Guadarrama, with its mosaic of old stone walls, village gardens and rocky slopes at medium altitude, provides ideal habitat. Unlike most European amphibians requiring pristine wetlands, the midwife toad thrives in human-modified landscapes, making encounters surprisingly approachable. The discovery of a tiny toad, camouflaged against grey stone, bearing his entire clutch on his legs, is quietly astonishing — a pocket-sized demonstration of one of nature's most inventive reproductive strategies, heard before it is seen and best appreciated in near silence.
