Manta Ray Aggregation — Coral Bay
Year-round but peaking in the warmer months, reef manta rays gather in the shallow lagoon waters of Coral Bay on Ningaloo Reef — feeding on plankton blooms just metres from shore and allowing snorkellers to drift alongside their vast, wing-like forms in crystal-clear water.
About this spectacle
At Coral Bay on Ningaloo Reef, reef manta rays glide through shallow, sun-warmed lagoon water just metres from the shoreline. Visitors wade or snorkel out and drift alongside these vast, wing-like creatures as they filter plankton from the surface layers, their cephalic fins curling forward as they feed in slow, looping passes. The water is famously clear — visibility is often exceptional — and the white sandy bottom illuminates the mantas from below, creating a luminous, almost otherworldly quality to the encounter. The spectacle runs year-round but intensifies during warmer months when plankton blooms concentrate near shore. The experience is genuinely accessible: no boat required, no technical skill needed. Sounds are limited to the gentle lap of water and your own breathing through a snorkel. Encounters happen at close range, sometimes within arm's reach, giving snorkellers an intimate and unhurried connection with animals whose wingspan can exceed four metres.
