Lupin Bloom Mackenzie — Twizel
A brief but spectacular spring explosion of rainbow-hued lupins lines the braided rivers and roadsides of the Mackenzie Basin near Twizel.
About this spectacle
Each spring, the roadsides and riverbanks around Twizel and the Mackenzie Basin transform into a vivid tapestry of lupins — tall, spire-shaped flowers in shades of purple, pink, white, and yellow that stretch toward the Southern Alps. The Russell lupins (an introduced species) line the braided rivers and lake margins, creating a striking contrast against the tawny tussock and snow-capped peaks beyond. Visitors drive slowly along State Highway 8, stopping at pull-offs to walk among the dense flower stands, the air lightly fragrant. The flat basin floor and wide skies make wide-angle photography irresistible, and the soft morning light catching dew on petals is a favourite shot. The season is brief — typically a few weeks in late November into December — so the sense of fleeting abundance adds to its appeal. Mornings before wind picks up offer the stillest conditions for photography.
