Loess Bluffs Snow Geese
Hundreds of thousands of snow geese swarm Loess Bluffs NWR each spring and fall migration, creating one of North America's most visceral bird spectacles.
About this spectacle
Each year, hundreds of thousands of snow geese descend on Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Missouri during their spring and fall migrations along the Central Flyway. Standing at the refuge's observation platforms, visitors are enveloped in a living blizzard of white and blue-phase birds lifting off and landing in choreographed waves. The sound is staggering — a continuous roar of wings and calls that carries across the marshes and impoundments. At dawn, massive flocks explode from the water into the pale sky, swirling in tightly packed formations before settling again to feed. The contrast of white birds against the rich Missouri bottomland, reflected in still water, creates an almost surreal scene. The spectacle draws serious photographers and casual birdwatchers alike, offering close, unobstructed views from managed levee trails.
