Land Between the Lakes Elk Bison
Free-roaming bison and reintroduced elk graze an open prairie loop at Land Between the Lakes — one of the few places in the eastern US to see both species up close.
About this spectacle
At Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in western Kentucky and Tennessee, visitors can observe free-roaming bison and elk within the Elk & Bison Prairie, a managed open grassland where these iconic North American megafauna graze at close range from a drive-through loop road. The bison herd is a tangible echo of the prairie herds that once covered the continent, while the elk — reintroduced to the region — add a striking scale and majesty to the landscape. In the golden light of morning or late afternoon, the animals move unhurriedly across the open terrain, offering remarkable unobstructed views. During the autumn rut, bull elk produce haunting bugles and bison bulls engage in dramatic posturing. The grassland setting, wide sky, and sheer size of the animals create an experience that feels wild despite the managed context.
