Kraansvlak Wisent

About this spectacle

Kraansvlak is a fenced rewilding zone within the South Kennemerland National Park on the Dutch coast, where a small herd of European bison (wisent) roams freely through dune woodland and scrubland. Visitors follow marked trails hoping to spot these massive, shaggy animals — the largest land mammals in Europe — as they graze among the shifting dunes and birch forests. Sightings are not guaranteed but always striking: an adult wisent can weigh close to a tonne, and encountering one at close range through the trees is a genuinely memorable wildlife moment. The surrounding landscape of coastal dunes, open heathland, and mossy woodland adds atmosphere, and the site is also rich in other wildlife including red deer, Highland cattle, and various raptors. Guided tours are available for a better chance of locating the herd.
